Hot chocolate is a go-to beverage for cold winter days, but why not switch things up a bit? If you love Mexican food and hot chocolate, Mexican hot chocolate is the perfect drink. However, if you’d like to kick things up a notch, spiked Mexican hot chocolate is even better. Rich and spicy, Mexican hot chocolate with a bit of reposado tequila is a flavorful, cozy beverage to warm up this winter.

Combine your love of Mexican food and cozy beverages with spiked Mexican hot chocolate! Here’s an easy recipe to try.

Spiked Mexican Hot Chocolate

Ingredients

  • About 1 ounce of Mexican chocolate (brands like Taza and Ibarra work well and are easy to find)
  • 1 cup of whole milk
  • 1 ounce reposado tequila
  • Optional: 1 ounce Ancho Reyes or another chili liqueur
  • 2 ounces heavy whipping cream
  • A cinnamon stick, for garnish

Instructions

In a small saucepan, heat the chocolate and the milk over medium-low heat. Stir continuously until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth. Be careful not to let it boil. Once the milk and chocolate are fully combined, remove from the heat and pour into a large mug. Add the tequila and chili liqueur and gently stir. If you prefer not to use chili liqueur but want a bit of extra spice, stir in a pinch of ground cinnamon and cayenne pepper.

Use the heavy whipping cream to make your own whipped cream. You don’t need any specialized equipment to make it. If you don’t have a stand or hand mixer, you can pour the cream into a container with a tight-fitting lid. Secure the lid and shake the container until the cream reaches the desired consistency. If you don’t have time to make your own whipped cream, there’s nothing wrong with grabbing a can to top off your hot chocolate.

After topping your hot chocolate with whipped cream, pop in a cinnamon stick for garnish, and enjoy!
