Sip on the Three Tequila Tequila Types

When you want a drink to go with your Mexican food, only one spirit will do: tequila. However, not all tequila is the same. That’s not to say one is necessarily better than another, but there are three primary types of tequila, each with its own characteristics. Depending on your tastes and what you’re drinking, you may prefer one tequila over another.

Unsure which tequila to enjoy with your favorite Mexican food? Here’s a look at the three primary types: Blanco, Reposado, and Añejo.

Blanco

Often referred to as silver or white tequila, Blanco is the simplest variety of tequila. Unlike other tequilas, Blanco is unaged or aged for a short period. Being unaged, the spirit does not absorb any flavors from the barrel, allowing the taste of agave to shine. Blanco tequila has a crisp, vibrant taste, with notes of citrus and pepper and the distinct earthiness of the agave plant. Its clean, uncomplicated flavor makes it the perfect choice for classic cocktails like the Margarita.

Reposado

Reposado, meaning “rested” in Spanish, ages in oak barrels for two months to one year. This aging process gives the tequila a subtle complexity as it takes on the flavors and colors of the wood. Reposado tequila has a smoother, more nuanced taste than Blanco, with hints of vanilla, caramel, and oak. Its more complex flavor makes it suitable for sipping neat or crafting cocktails with a richer flavor profile, such as a Tequila Old Fashioned or Paloma.

Añejo

Añejo tequila is the most refined and sophisticated of the classic tequilas. It ages for one to three years in oak barrels, resulting in a remarkably smooth spirit. It has deep, complex flavors similar to aged spirits like whiskey or brandy. Drinking Añejo is a rich and satisfying experience, with notes of caramel, chocolate, dried fruit, and oak, along with a velvety texture that coats the palate. It’s best on its own or in cocktails that allow its luxurious character to come through, such as an Añejo Manhattan or neat in a snifter.
