Mexican food is always a great choice whether you want something easy to go or to share a sit-down meal with friends and family. But not all Mexican restaurants are the same. No matter where you are, there will be multiple restaurants, all claiming to have authentic Mexican cuisine. But how do you know if they’re really authentic? Luckily, there are a few simple things you can look for.
These three things let you know if a restaurant serves authentic Mexican food.
The guacamole is fresh.
Guacamole always costs extra, but nobody ever minds. That’s because you just can’t beat fresh guacamole. And don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t tell the difference. Because you absolutely can. What’s more, you can see the difference. Guacamole that’s made in big batches and stuck in the fridge looks a little bit sad and can’t compete with the vibrance of freshly-made guac.
The salsa is top-notch.
The first thing you taste at a Mexican restaurant is, more often than not, the salsa. Pretty much before you even have a chance to take a look at the menu, they put chips and salsa on the table. If it’s clearly made from fresh and quality ingredients, that’s a good sign that everything that’s on the menu is made to the same standard.
They offer corn tortillas.
This may seem trivial, but it’s actually pretty important. Corn tortillas are the traditional option for dishes like tacos. Most restaurants also offer flour tortillas because they know that American diners usually prefer them. However, if they don’t even have the option to choose corn tortillas, that should be a red flag. Before Europeans brought wheat to the Americas, corn was the most common grain used in Mexican cuisine. Even if you don’t plan to order them, you should always check that traditional corn tortillas are an available option.
